From the Mekong to Jersey: A Journey Rooted in Flavor and Curiosity

Our Story

Umami Mushrooms was born from a moment of curiosity — and a bowl of something unforgettable. While traveling through Vietnam, I fell in love with pho — the rich, aromatic noodle soup layered with herbs, spices, and deep, savory flavors. The first time I tasted enoki mushrooms in that broth, something clicked. There was this incredible umami depth — earthy, satisfying, and completely new to me. That simple meal planted a seed: Could I grow mushrooms like this myself?

When I returned to Jersey, I brought that inspiration home with me. I was born in Madeira, where growing food was a way of life. From an early age, I was drawn to the garden — planting vegetables, harvesting what we ate, and learning the rhythms of nature. That lifelong connection to growing things made mushrooms feel like a natural next step.

As I explored the world of fungi, I quickly realized how fascinating and overlooked mushrooms truly are — not just as food, but as living, breathing ecosystems. I started experimenting in small batches, learning through trial, error, and a lot of late nights. What began as a hobby grew into a mission: to make mushroom growing accessible, fun, and rewarding for everyone.

Today, Umami Mushrooms offers simple, handcrafted grow kits for anyone who wants to reconnect with nature and flavor. We’ve started with Oyster mushrooms, and we’re expanding soon into Lion’s Mane and more exciting varieties.

At Umami Mushrooms, it’s not just about the harvest — it’s about curiosity, creativity, and rediscovering the joy of growing your own food.

Thanks for being here and joining the journey.
